Building a Custom Home in Columbus Starts With the Right Team
Building a custom home in Central Ohio is not a single decision. It is a series of them, and where you start determines everything that follows. Some of our Columbus clients come to us with land already in hand. A Delaware County acreage lot in Galena or Sunbury, where the site itself becomes part of the design. A Powell or Dublin lot inside a community with architectural guidelines that require a builder who understands how to work within those parameters without sacrificing individuality. A New Albany estate property where the lot size and neighborhood character call for something that feels intentional from the street all the way through the back of the house.
Others come to us before they have land at all, and that is equally common. Our Columbus team, led by General Manager Kevin English, knows this market from the ground up. We are not a Northeast Ohio builder trying to figure out Central Ohio. We have completed homes across Delaware, Franklin, and Licking counties, and we are building in communities from Worthington to Westerville to Hilliard to the estate corridors north of the city in Powell and Lewis Center.
What brings every client to us is the same thing: they want a home designed around their life, not selected from a catalog. Our in-house architects and designers work directly with you from the first meeting, which means the person designing your home is also accountable for building it. That integration is rare in this market, and it is the reason our Columbus clients consistently tell us the process felt different from anything else they explored.

A Delaware County Estate in Galena
The lot on Walnut Valley Drive in Galena came with two things most clients dream about: acreage, and the room to build something that could not exist on a standard subdivision lot. The challenge was designing a home that felt generous and open without losing the warmth and intimacy the clients wanted to live in every day.
OWC of Columbus designed a 3,681-square-foot home anchored by a great room with 14-foot ceilings and a full-height white ledgestone fireplace flanked by firewood niches on both sides. Exposed mitered oak beams carry across the ceiling and into the kitchen, where arched stone surrounds rise above the cabinetry to frame a wall of windows that brings the wooded lot directly into the room. A separate hearth room off the kitchen gives the family a quieter gathering space while keeping the great room open for entertaining. The main floor primary suite is private from the rest of the home, with two additional bedrooms positioned on the second floor. A finished basement, three-car garage, covered rear porch, upper deck, and pool complete the program.
The result is a home that reads as a Delaware County estate from the moment you arrive and feels like home the moment you walk in. If you own acreage in Galena, Powell, New Albany, or anywhere across the Central Ohio corridor, this is the kind of design conversation OWC specializes in.
How Building a Custom Home in Columbus Works
Working with Old World Custom Homes follows a clear three-step process designed to give you complete information before you commit to anything.
Home Design Package
Your engagement starts with a $2,500 Conceptual Design Agreement. For that investment, our in-house architects produce a custom floor plan drawn to your lot and your life, architectural drawings, a photorealistic 3D exterior rendering, and fully itemized pricing for your home. You own everything we produce. There is no obligation to build, and there are no vague estimates. You leave with a real number and a real design.
Building Agreement
Once you are ready to move forward, we finalize your Building Agreement. From that point you have access to a live project schedule online that you can follow throughout the entire build.
Construction
Your home is built by the local Columbus team, with the same people who designed it staying accountable through every phase of construction. Kevin English and his team manage your project from groundbreaking through move-in.

Common Questions About Building a Custom Home in Columbus
How much does it cost to build a custom home in Columbus, Ohio?
Most custom homes OWC builds in the Columbus metro fall in the range of $260 to $360 per square foot for a fully finished, move-in-ready home including upgrades, site conditions, and all associated costs. For homes in the 3,000 to 4,500 square foot range, total project investment typically lands between $800,000 and $1.5 million. Homes with higher specification finishes, larger footprints, or complex sites can move above that range. The most accurate way to understand your number is through a Home Design Package, which produces itemized pricing specific to your home and lot.
Does Old World Custom Homes build on my lot in Columbus?
Yes. Every OWC home is built on the client’s land, whether you already own it or are still searching. We build on acreage lots in Delaware County, on platted lots inside planned communities in Powell, Dublin, and New Albany, and on existing properties where a teardown or addition makes sense. If you have land and are not sure whether it works, our Columbus team can help you evaluate it.
How long does it take to build a custom home near Columbus?
Timeline varies based on the size and complexity of your home, permitting in your specific municipality, and site conditions. We walk through realistic timeline expectations during the Home Design Package process, and once your Building Agreement is signed you have access to a live project schedule online so you can follow every phase from wherever you are.
Do I need my own architect to build a custom home in Columbus?
No. OWC has in-house architects who design your home as part of the process. You do not need to hire a separate architect and then find a builder to interpret those plans. The same team that draws your home builds it, which eliminates the coordination gap that causes most custom home problems.
What makes Old World Custom Homes different from other builders in Columbus?
Three things set OWC apart in the Columbus market. First, in-house architecture: your designer and your builder are the same organization. Second, the design-first process: we design your home before you commit to build, so you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs. Third, a proven track record: OWC has completed 500-plus homes, earned the HBA of Greater Akron Builder of the Year award for 2024, won five Columbus BIA Parade of Homes awards in 2023, and earned consecutive Best of Houzz Design recognition in 2024 and 2025.
